Streetwear Clothing Brand Founded by Jeff Staple

If it just ended up on Hypebeast, it just becomes a Hypebeast thing. But because it was on The Post, it became a 90-year-old grandma living on the Upper West Side. I mean, I love the design and it had great storytelling, but the timing was a huge factor. The biggest stroke of luck was that the reporter who broke that story for the New York Post lived on Orchard Street.

And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before. One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

On the current state of streetwear:

He walked out of that store with an order of 12 shirts. Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now. Don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

For the ultimate host

The manager asked him where he got it, and then placed an order for 12 more. Within a few years Ng’s company (named Staple Design after his streetwear alter ego, Jeff Staple) was a successful fashion/graphic design/marketing studio collaborating with some of the industry’s biggest brands. In 2005, when a limited-edition drop of his Staple Nike SB “Pigeon” sneaker caused a small riot outside Staple Design’s retail store, Jeff Staple became a streetwear legend. Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches.

Music

In 2024, the Clippers are scheduled to leave Crypto.com Arena for their own arena, Intuit Dome. Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Downtown Los Angeles. Opened on October 17, 1999, it is located next to the Los Angeles Convention Center complex along Figueroa Street, and has since been considered a part of L.A. For the fabulous host, caviar is such a refined gift to add a special flare to a night with guests.

Today’s episode was produced by Rikki Novetsky, Nina Feldman, Eric Krupke, and Alex Stern. It was edited by Lisa Chow and Patricia Willens; contains original music by Marion Lozano, Dan Powell, Rowan Niemisto, and Sophia Lanman; and was engineered by Chris Wood. Our theme music is by Jim Brunberg and Ben Landsverk of Wonderly.

So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before. The arena has hosted three public memorials for celebrities.

If Rachel Sklar did not live on Orchard Street, the whole mythology of the Pigeon Dunk may be different now, because that newspaper cover is so tied to the actual shoe. Get on the list for exclusive items, sales, and new arrivals. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply.

On the eve of the Canadian capsule collection’s June 20th drop, we spoke to Staple about the rise of streetwear, the art of the collab and where it all goes from here. What started as a small T-Shirt line handmade by jeffstaple, grew organically and began to gain visibility in NYC. In the process of building this burgeoning brand, Nike asked jeffstaple in 2005 to create a special commemorative sneaker that would represent New York. The STAPLE x Nike Dunk Pro Low SB "NYC Pigeon" was conceived and lead to much fanfare upon its release and exposed Staple—as well as sneaker culture—to the masses. In 1997, jeffstaple walked into a boutique in New York City wearing a shirt he printed in his silkscreen class at Parsons School of Design. He had no intention of even wanting to start a brand.

Explore ARHU on Maryland Day 2024! School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies

neighborhood design center

We prioritize bringing the right people to the project early and work to build actionable and inspirational documents that will guide the creation of just and equitable places. Whether working at the neighborhood scale, on a city street, or in a pocket park, our certified arborists support communities to leverage the many public health benefits of a healthy tree canopy. In 1993, NDC expanded outside of Baltimore, opening a second office in Prince George’s County to serve the older, lower-income communities surrounding Washington DC. The expansion of NDC allowed the organization to draw from a regional volunteer base—from Northern Virginia to suburban Baltimore—as well as assist various statewide initiatives. By providing the tools, expertise, and partnerships necessary to realize neighborhood visions, we support broad participation in the evolution of the built environment, positioning historically disinvested neighborhoods to attract future investment. We redirect resources to underserved areas because everyone deserves healthy, high-quality public spaces.

The passion and dedication of these valuable team members is essential to making our projects successful.

After working on interdisciplinary projects ranging from city-wide discussions about Zurich's climate action plan, to neighborhood engagement on public greenspaces and mobility, she is excited to be on site in Baltimore working with and for community-initiated projects. Outside of work you'll find her biking somewhere with a cake strapped to her back rack. Angelica is a recent graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Multimodal Transportation and Pedestrian Planning

The goals of the architects were to use the projects as a community organizing tool, a means of advocating for urban development, and as a tool for increasing investment in Baltimore’s neighborhoods. Nicole Ringel is an artist and arts administrator with a passion for place-based art and design that activates civic engagement, amplifies community voices, and contributes to a strengthened social fabric for all. In Studio Art and Art History from McDaniel College and completed her M.F.A. in Intermedia and Digital Art at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where her thesis work focused on investigating layered social and ecological histories in public spaces.

Architecture

Nicole comes to the Neighborhood Design Center from Baltimore Center Stage, where she managed fundraising operations across corporate, foundation, government, individual giving, and special events. Jennifer Goold joined the Neighborhood Design Center in 2012 after more than a decade of work in cultural resources management, historic preservation, development and planning. At NDC, she directs all aspects of the center’s operations including staff, programs, outreach, and fundraising.

Community Planning

Ms. Puzey began her post graduate career in Baltimore City in 2009, working with residents and communities to identify stormwater problems and site stormwater BMPs. In 2015, Dana joined NDC to oversee the organization’s urban forestry work in Prince George’s County. Her work evolved to include enterprise development for both offices and she served as an executive team member in the Enterprise Development Director role through 2022.

Hostile Architecture: The Cause and Effect of Restricting Public Space

The North East Housing Initiative is just one of our amazing partners, but a great example of how the Neighborhood Design Center helps all voices to be heard and provides the tools, plans, and connections to help communites achieve their neighborhood dreams. We work with communities on plans that maximize safety for all, enhance ecological functions and economic appeal of the streetscape, and create great, dynamic streets that reflect their respective communities. Depending on community needs, plans may address sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bus lanes, public transportation stops, crossing opportunities, median islands, and more.

Things to do in Brooklyn

Designed by architect Cesar Pelli, FAIA, the beautifully landscaped, 14-acre campus is located in the City of West Hollywood, CA. Pacific Design Center’s “Blue Whale” opened in 1975 at 750,000 square-feet. Realizing Pelli’s original vision, the Green Building followed in 1988 at 450,000 square-feet and, finally, the Red Building in 2012 at 400,000 square-feet, offering class A, creative office space for premier businesses, including entertainment, fashion, technology and the arts. Our environmental resilience planning team integrates Best Management Practices (BMPs) for stormwater management, flood mitigation, and climate change to address community concerns. The Neighborhood Design Center leverages the experience of our full-time staff from different design fields to create a rich collaborative environment of interdisciplinary expertise. We employ student interns from The Ohio State University and provide real-world experience, where clients and interns work together to meet real budgets, deadlines, and design expectations.

When a community has a vision — but lacks resources or meets systemic roadblocks — the Neighborhood Design Center can help.

There are all sorts of events throughout the weekend, starting Friday. "It's an heirloom. My grandson who's got a family of his own right now, the cars in the will for him to get it so it's gonna stay in the family for a long time." "I bought it as a project. Completely gutted shell. It may look ratty and original patina but it's got a new stroker motor, trasmission. And it goes on an 1000-mile trip every summer so it's a very reliable vehicle."

Starting as early as Thursday, car enthusiasts will crowd Woodward and surrounding communities to showcase their wheels. Auto enthusiasts from all over the world, including New Zealand, Japan and Australia, flock to the cruise annually for a taste of car history in Michigan. Today, the cruise takes over metro Detroit's most famous road as people flock to see classics, oddities and more.

During the Woodward Dream Cruise, the SMART Shuttle will be free for everyone who wants to ride. People can catch a ride at any of the SMART RED or FAST bus stops from Eight Mile Road to Pontiac. The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts over 1 million visitors, and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles. This had resulted in the federal government's Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations of 1975 and the proliferation, temporarily, of more fuel-efficient and less powerful automobiles. However, the Woodward Dream Cruise also welcomes vehicles of all models whose owners have either scrupulously maintained or customized their car to create a unique vehicle or statement. Woodward Avenue, officially M-1, is one of the main north/south drags in metro Detroit, and when the first robin appears and eats its first worm sometime in March, the cars start coming. And they don’t stop coming until well into September. We just spent the entire day in and around the Motor City enjoying the automotive sights and sounds of the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The annual Woodward Dream Cruise started in 1995 and now attracts cars and people from all over the globe. We're revving our engines, getting ready for the cruise. In addition to the photo galleries, videos, and news you'll find here, watch for live coverage Dream Cruise week on 7 Action News.

It typically attracts over 1 million visitors and attendees, as well as over 40,000 unique vehicles. Automotive enthusiasts in metro Detroit better gear up, as the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic cars returns to Woodward Avenue. We kicked things off up above with muscle cars, classics and hot rods, since those make up the largest part of the collection. Everything from pre-war American cars to 1960s fire-breathers and custom-built street machines are included in the gallery up top.

Pre-registering is available online or on the day of, sign-up will be available at  Shrine Catholic High School. Registration is $40 until Wednesday  and will be $45 the day of the race. WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) and WOMC-FM  (104.3) will be broadcasting live from Birmingham. On Friday and Saturday at West 12 Mile, official Woodward Dream Cruise merchandise will be available for purchase all day. Mary Brandenburg of Warren was with her husband and their 1976 Cadillac Special Edition enjoying quality time. Mike Cocklin from Ohio was there today showing off his 1957 Chevy, while Frank Pavia from Plymouth brought his 1974 Cushman Trucker which was converted from an old meter maid vehicle.

Parking will be very limited in communities along the parade route, so allow for some extra time and patience. Parking can be found at lots and structures in Ferndale, Royal Oak, Birmingham and Pontiac, space permitting. Street parking is another option but take note of time restrictions and costs to avoid tickets and/or towing. Attendees can hop on a free SMART dream cruise shuttle from 8 Mile to Pontiac. Passengers can board at any RED SMART or FAST bus stops along Woodward.

In addition, the event website shared a Facebook account where the community shares more information about where visitors can find parking and other events. Ushering in more than 1 million people and roughly 40,000 classic street machines to the region, spectators will line up along Woodward Avenue for a stretch spanning nine Oakland County communities this weekend. Police departments from each community patrol on foot, horseback and vehicles during the Cruise to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for everyone. A team of amateur radio operators also serve as additional “eyes and ears” of law enforcement officials along the Cruise route.

It began as an effort by Nelson House plus a group of volunteers seeking to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale. They also wanted to re-create the nostalgic era of the 1950s and '60s, with music and cars roaming down Woodward. The first year brought in 250,000 people and has grown each year since then. Big-finned Caddys, classic Corvettes, souped-up dragsters, and even the venerable 1997 Honda Civic Type R, which turns 25 this year, will be lined up bumper-to-bumper Saturday for the 27th annual Woodward Dream Cruise. They come out to cruise Woodward every year for the Dream Cruise with this '46 Chevy truck. We love to see all the great family moments happening along the avenue today.

In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway.

ENGINE Room Tour Behind the Fun Carnival Cruise Lines Cruise Critic Community

engine room on a cruise ship

Emergency generators are instead used only for essential navigation systems - crucial communication equipment, critical pumps in the engine room, emergency lighting. Should they also fail, vessels are required to have a battery backup. 24 hours of power are at least provided by battery rooms to the smaller emergency equipment list. Big ships require much power, so they might have more than one emergency generator. Despite that, they don't have the capacity of main generators and engines, don't produce electricity enough to move the ship, and can't supply all the power needed in ports, because of constraints in space. Wartsila's fuel engine package was specifically designed to reduce fuel consumption.

What Engines Are Used in Larger Ships?

Now that you have an understanding of the inner makeup of the hull, we can take a look at the exterior layers and structure. While it may look seamless from the outside of the ship, the hull of a cruise ship is made up of several segments that all serve a unique function. Since there is so much space available in the hull of a cruise ship, it is a good location for various storage compartments and refrigeration rooms. Depending on the ship’s needs, these storage areas can be used to store everything from food and beverages to medical supplies and bedding. Even though it may seem less glamorous than other aspects of your vacation, it is worth considering the ship itself.

Electrical Department

Instead of the more traditional engine-shaft-propeller arrangement, in this case the engines are connected to generators to create electricity. The generators power electric motors, and the electric motors move the propellers. As you'd expect, an area that creates enough power to drive a skyscraper-sized vessel through the water is large -- and engine rooms are often at least three decks high. But because space is at a premium on cruise ships, engine rooms might not be the vast, cavernous space you envision. Rather than a long, continuous hall stretching the length of the hull, machinery is divided into smaller watertight compartments. One area might contain the main engines; another compartment might house the air conditioning system.

Ever wondered what goes on inside a cruise ship and what makes it all tick? From food prep at specialty restaurants to what room stewards do for their guests, there's only so much information the average passenger can glean about life onboard ships. While I have to admit to some bias here (my son is studying to become a ship's engineering officer at the US Merchant Marine Academy), I really thought the engine control room was one of the highlights of the tour.

While engine room visits may not be available on all cruise lines, several cruise companies recognize the curiosity and interest of their passengers and offer this unique opportunity. Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line are among the popular cruise lines that allow engine room tours. Each cruise line has its own policies and procedures regarding these visits, so it’s advisable to check with the specific cruise line before booking your trip to ensure engine room tours are available.

Wow, we certainly learned a lot about cruise ships!

This technology allows sulfur emissions to be reduced by 99%, and NOx emissions - by 75%. Those who support the cruise industry point out that cruising has never been more popular. A solution is to have docked vessels plug into the port's shore power grid. Most of the world's largest cruise ports have such dockside electrical hookups, reducing bad emissions by up to 95%. All the ship's electrical equipment is certified "explosion-proof".

Due to high specifications and standards, it is rare for a cruise ship to experience engine failure. The International Maritime Organization has a “Safe Return to Port” initiative. It keeps out noise and reduces the heat generated by fully operating engines. The high voltage switchboards require special training and procedures, with regards to electrical safety, which cruise ship electricians are equipped and certified with. It is one department that has a large scope of work as electrical installations and equipment are everywhere on the ship, many of them requiring everyday checks and maintenance, both regular and breakdown.

engine room on a cruise ship

Its chemical structure also has a stable composition that doesn't generate unburned residues, soot or any particulates. In addition, because the fuel is so clean, on LNG-powered ships maintenance intervals are doubled (over 25,000 hours / ~10140 days), as opposed to the standard MDO-powered 12,500 hours (520 days). The Promas Lite propulsion future clients, besides passenger ships, are marine vessels like fishing and freighter ships. All ships rely on propellers/screws to be pushed through the water, providing forward and reverse motion. Airplanes, for example, require tremendous propeller speeds to provide the forward motion, but ship propellers don't need to turn so fast and rely on torque power. Therefore, ships travel slowly and rarely top 30 knots (for more info follow our speed-link above).

Main Plant & Environmental Engineering

There are various reasons for speed variations which are outlined in detail in this article. The largest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas, utilizes six marine-diesel sets, with each composed of three 16-cylinder Wartsila engines. Today, more and more ports (and ships) are being fitted with systems that allow a ship to literally "plug in" to a local shoreside electric grid when docked. The ship's engines can be turned off, which helps reduce emission and pollution. Possibly the most basic detail to understand about the engine room is its location.

However, thanks to insulation and other sound reduction technology, it’s not nearly that loud in practice. Regardless of the size of the cruise ship, the engine in question is very, very loud. Fortunately, engineers can compensate for this by utilising sound reduction technology and designing the engine room of a cruise ship to be well-insulated. Perhaps you’re fascinated with the engines that power a cruise ship, or perhaps you want to know which cabins to stay well away from, due to the noise and vibrations of the engine. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.

On a ship, the engine room (ER)[1] is the compartment where the machinery for marine propulsion is located. The engine room is generally the largest physical compartment of the machinery space. It houses the vessel's prime mover, usually some variations of a heat engine (steam engine, diesel engine, gas or steam turbine). On some ships, there may be more than one engine room, such as forward and aft, or port or starboard engine rooms, or may be simply numbered.

However, on certain cruise lines, visiting the engine room may attract an extra fee. Typically, if additional charges apply, they are minimal compared to the overall cost of the cruise. This durable material is required to withstand the immense pressure and stress of traveling through oceans and large seas. A cruise ship hull will also contain ballast tanks, which help control the stability of the entire vessel.

Debuting onboard Carnival Panorama, SkyZone trampoline park participants can joust an opponent off the balance beam, climb a swinging rope ladder, go for a slam dunk in the hoops section or just bounce around. Onboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class ships, RipCord by iFly gives guests the opportunity to try skydiving in a controlled environment. Royal Caribbean’s FlowRider allows many guests to try surfing for the first time. Their locations at the back of the ships on the Voyager, Freedom, Oasis and Quantum class ships offer riders an amazing view. Don't forget surfing, skating, ziplining, laser tag, go-kart racing, escape rooms and even skydiving.

A Royal Caribbean cruise lets you enjoy the best of both worlds – fast-paced fun and/or slowing down to savor some quiet time. Casinos are open normally when the ship is sailing from port to port, and can get pretty busy in the evenings. The ship hosts regular tournaments between guests, which are divided into those for advanced climbers and novices across different age groups. They host speed runs and challenges and most challenging advanced climber sessions for those who really want to test their abilities. While you may be looking forward to climbing an actual rock face on one of the islands that you visit, there's no better way to practice, learn how to climb or perfect your skills than on an artificial wall.

Basketball courts can be found on numerous ships from virtually every cruise line. For those that like to hit the links, there a variety of mini-golf courses, affording some of the best views onboard. If bowling is more in your lane, bowling alleys can be found onboard select ships from Norwegian and MSC Cruises.

Up to 13 guests at a time can enjoy the 15 to 20-minute rides which operate on a varying schedule in port and on sea days. (5) Active/Sports – For those that like to have fun while staying active, there are multiple activities onboard cruises ships. A signature item found onboard Royal Caribbean ships is the rock wall, with two of the largest on each Oasis class ship. Norwegian Cruise Line also has rock climbing walls on several of their ships. Challenging ropes courses can be found on several cruise ships from Carnival, Norwegian and also MSC Cruises.

Often, young children will have dance parties or even play games of tag in the disco during the day, while teens may have a special evening in the evening. The onboard fitness center provides a wide range of cardio and strength-training equipment for use at no charge. Many have separate rooms for morning and afternoon exercise classes. Class schedules can be found in the daily program, or you can pick up a copy from the gym. Be aware that most ships have done away with free classes and have moved towards specialty classes such as yoga, Pilates, and spin, which cost $10 to $15 per class. (One exception is Virgin Voyages, where most fitness classes are included in the fare).
