The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts over 1 million visitors, and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles. This had resulted in the federal government's Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations of 1975 and the proliferation, temporarily, of more fuel-efficient and less powerful automobiles. However, the Woodward Dream Cruise also welcomes vehicles of all models whose owners have either scrupulously maintained or customized their car to create a unique vehicle or statement. Woodward Avenue, officially M-1, is one of the main north/south drags in metro Detroit, and when the first robin appears and eats its first worm sometime in March, the cars start coming. And they don’t stop coming until well into September. We just spent the entire day in and around the Motor City enjoying the automotive sights and sounds of the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The annual Woodward Dream Cruise started in 1995 and now attracts cars and people from all over the globe. We're revving our engines, getting ready for the cruise. In addition to the photo galleries, videos, and news you'll find here, watch for live coverage Dream Cruise week on 7 Action News.

It typically attracts over 1 million visitors and attendees, as well as over 40,000 unique vehicles. Automotive enthusiasts in metro Detroit better gear up, as the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic cars returns to Woodward Avenue. We kicked things off up above with muscle cars, classics and hot rods, since those make up the largest part of the collection. Everything from pre-war American cars to 1960s fire-breathers and custom-built street machines are included in the gallery up top.

Street parking is another option but take note of time restrictions and costs to avoid tickets and/or towing. Attendees can hop on a free SMART dream cruise shuttle from 8 Mile to Pontiac. Passengers can board at any RED SMART or FAST bus stops along Woodward.

In addition, the event website shared a Facebook account where the community shares more information about where visitors can find parking and other events. Ushering in more than 1 million people and roughly 40,000 classic street machines to the region, spectators will line up along Woodward Avenue for a stretch spanning nine Oakland County communities this weekend. Police departments from each community patrol on foot, horseback and vehicles during the Cruise to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for everyone. A team of amateur radio operators also serve as additional “eyes and ears” of law enforcement officials along the Cruise route.

It began as an effort by Nelson House plus a group of volunteers seeking to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale. They also wanted to re-create the nostalgic era of the 1950s and '60s, with music and cars roaming down Woodward. The first year brought in 250,000 people and has grown each year since then. Big-finned Caddys, classic Corvettes, souped-up dragsters, and even the venerable 1997 Honda Civic Type R, which turns 25 this year, will be lined up bumper-to-bumper Saturday for the 27th annual Woodward Dream Cruise. They come out to cruise Woodward every year for the Dream Cruise with this '46 Chevy truck. We love to see all the great family moments happening along the avenue today.

In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway.
